Best Start Birth Center, operated by San Diego Midwives, has been in our current location, on 4th avenue since 1989 and has brought well over 5,000 babies into the world. Families have had the choice to give birth at the first state licensed and nationally accredited birth center in California, for nearly three decades! Our San Diego midwives specialize in pregnancy care that includes: free pregnancy tests, prenatal/birth/postpartum care, free breast feeding support, well-woman services, contraceptive care, and GYN care with midwives. We also offer volunteer doula support when available.
Our program uses both Certified Nurse Midwives, Licensed Midwives, and Obstetricians to provide the medical attention that is so important to ensure healthy mothers and babies. In addition, we also offer hearing screens, Comprehensive Perinatal Services (CPSP), provide Presumptive Medi-Cal, participate in the Paternity Opportunity Program, and we are members of the perinatal care network.
Other services offered at Best Start are: child birth education, resources for natural childbirth, and lactation support. Our San Diego midwives /staff/our-midwives/ believe birth is a time for celebration and empowerment for women. Our focus is on family birthing. We believe birth is a time to be cherished, not a medical event. As long as labor is progressing as it should our San Diego midwives will support the process of natural birth utilizing non-invasive comfort measures. We believe a woman who is supported knows how to birth her baby. We listen.

*Prenatal care is also available for Vaginal Birth After Cesarean (VBAC) for moms planning a natural hospital birth/delivery.
